Amoxicillin / Clavulanate is a combination of Amoxicillin and clavulanic acid used to treat bacterial infections in different parts of the human body. Amoxicillin is an antibiotic of the penicillin type that fights numerous bacteria. While clavulanic acid is a beta-lactamase inhibitor that enhances the effectiveness of Amoxicillin by preventing amoxicillin resistance by certain bacteria.
Amoxicillin and Clavulanate is commonly prescribed to treat sinusitis, otitis media, lower respiratory tract (including pneumonia), strep throat, urinary tract, skin infections, cellulitis or even animal bites.
Several forms of Amoxicillin / Clavulanate can be found on the market such as powder for suspension and tablets including chewable. Amoxicillin / Clavulanate is sold under the brand name Augmentin but it can also be purchased as one of cheaper generic equivalents.
Don’t use Amoxicillin / Clavulanate to treat virus infections like influenza or cold, for example. Antibiotics can’t fight against viruses but treat only certain bacterial infections.
